Edinburgh Innovations Limited (otherwise known as "EI") recognises the importance of respecting and protecting the privacy and confidentiality of anyone who visits the EI website.

This privacy statement sets out the policy of EI towards the collection and use of information obtained from those visiting and using the EI website.

By using the EI website you consent to the collection, retention and use of your personal information in accordance with this policy. Although the policy has been developed to take account of changes in internet technology, it is subject to change and any such changes will only be notified on this page.

In order to use most of the EI website, you are currently not required to register or provide any personal information about yourself.

  • Your responses to surveys which we ask you to complete for research purposes;
  • How you use the website; or
  • Any other information you post, email or otherwise send to us.

Enquiry form data

Any contact with EI via our website (for example, through enquiry or contact forms) will request contact information (such as your name, organisation, postal address, telephone and e-mail address). This may be personal information if you are making an enquiry of your own volition.

If you use our ‘Click-Thru Licensing System’, you will be required to register with us by providing some personal information (such as your name, organisation, postal address, telephone and e-mail address).

This information is requested to allow us to respond to your enquiry accordingly. By supplying this information, you are consenting to EI (or The University of Edinburgh) keeping it for a reasonable period of time and using it for the purposes set out below.

How we use your information

We use your information provided by you to:

  • enable us to supply you with the goods, services and information which you have requested;
  • analyse the information we collect so that we can administer, support and improve and develop the website;
  • provide you with information, products or services that you request from us or which we feel may interest you, where you have consented to be contacted for such purposes; or
  • notify you about changes to our service.

We may contact you by post, telephone or fax as well as by email and text message.

Storage of your information

Transmission of information via the internet is not completely secure. Although we will do our best to protect your personal data, we cannot guarantee the security of data transmitted to the website. Any transmission is at your own risk.

Once we have received your information, we employ security measures to protect your information from access by unauthorised persons and against unlawful processing, accidental loss, destruction or damage.


Where we have given you (or where you have chosen) a password which enables you to access certain parts of the website, you are responsible for keeping this password confidential. We ask you not to share a password with anyone.

Online transactions

We do not store credit card details, nor do we share customer details with any third parties.

All payment transactions will be encrypted. Areas of the site that process online transactions make use of - and transfer data to - third-party software and service providers. All third-party software and service providers that we use are compliant with the relevant Payment Card Industry standards.

Disclosure of your information

Unless required to do so by law, we will not share, sell or distribute any of the information you provide to us without your consent.

Authorised personnel within Edinburgh Innovations will be able to access the information you provide to us. We may also disclose your personal information to The University of Edinburgh or any other subsidiary of the University of Edinburgh, for the purposes disclosed in this privacy statement.

If you use the ‘Click-Thru Licensing System’ ( and choose to purchase a licence using our electronic payment option, we may pass your personal information to a third party payment facilitator (such as PayPal) in order to facilitate your payment.

To comply with statutory requirements, we may sometimes be required to share your personal information with external agencies, particularly for the purposes of detection or prevention of crime or fraud.

How to access/update information held about you

You have the right to ask for a copy of the information held by us in our records in return for which we charge a small fee.
